News Briefs April 16, 2023
What do hot dogs, 12 year-old brides, and travel warnings have in common? They’re all a part of this week’s news briefs.
We’ve heard of a dog fight, and food fight, but what about a hot dog fight? That’s what happened this week at a Philadelphia Phillies baseball game.
It was during one of their promotional “Dollar Dog Night” where fans – you guessed it – could buy one of those tubular steaks for just a buck. What could go wrong?
Apparently, a lot! Just watch.
Our local team, the Vermont Lake Monsters
Have three of their Hot Dog Hysteria nights scheduled for this summer. On those nights, the dogs go for just a quarter, but trust me, no one is going to be throwing away a McKenzie Country Classic.
Remember when Paul Lynde asked
“What’s the matter with kids today” in the musical Bye Bye Birdie?
Well, if you ask Arkansas’s new governor,
Sarah, “call me Aunt Lydia” Huckleberry Hound Sanders, LOTS!
Sanders has signed a sweeping bill imposing a minimum age limit for social media usage. The bill requires social media platforms to confirm the ages of all users and to refuse accounts to those under 18 unless they have parental permission.
Good luck with that.
But, kids, if you want to have fun, scoot on over to Missouri, where during debate Tuesday on a bill banning gender-affirming care for transgender minors,
Missouri State Senator Mike Moon suggested children as young as 12 should have the right to marry with parental permission.
“Do you know any kids who have been married at age 12? I do. And guess what? They’re still married,” Moon said
But, can a 12 year old go to a drag show with parental permission? Probably not in Arkansas or Missouri.
Another state to put on your places to avoid,
Equality Florida took the extraordinary step of issuing a travel advisory,
warning of the risks posed to the health, safety, and freedom of those considering short or long term travel, or relocation to the state.
The move comes in response to a wave of of laws that are hostile to the LGBTQ community, restrict access to reproductive health care, repeal gun safety laws, foment racial prejudice, and attack public education by banning books and censoring curriculum.
And just weeks ago, Florida chapters of the NAACP voted unanimously to request similar warnings to the Black community about the risk of traveling or relocating to the state.
You have no idea how thankful I am to be living in Vermont
– where Freedom and Unity reign.
And that’s this week’s news briefs.
